As the element of a home that directly contacts the earth, foundations are one of
the most important pieces of a successful home project. Foundations must be able to withstand
the forces of pressure of the soil, moisture, weight of the home, vibration, temperature and
settling for example.
A properly designed foundation will rest on a "footing". Footings are poured slabs of concrete
usually 2 or 3 times wider than the width of the wall that rests on it. The footings distribute
the weight of the wall more evenly to the soil and help prevent settling. Footings are poured
separately from the walls and are allowed to cure before the wall is constructed on top of it.
Footings usually consist of steel reinforced concrete.
The actual foundation walls are typically made from concrete poured into a wooden form. The wooden form
is constructed to the shape and size to match the floor plan of the house that will rest on it.
The house rests on a sill plate and is anchored to the concrete with bolts that are set into the
wet concrete immediately after it is poured.
The foundation is the strongest support "beam" in your home and should only be installed by a
professional foundation contractor.
Fortunately GBI-Avis modular homes can be that contractor for you.
